Summer of Astronomy
This summer, LifeWorks will be hosting a weekly series of two-hour group sessions focussed on the field of astronomy. Each session will open up to students a new way of exploring the cosmos through the analysis of astronomical data currently accessible online, using the same software used by professional astronomers worldwide. No prior knowledge of astronomy is expected and the depth of inquiry will adapt to each student’s interest and experience. Topics will include: spotting asteroids; tracking the motion of Jupiter’s moons; identifying variable stars; and collecting evidence of exoplanets, black holes and the expansion of the universe. Weather permitting, after-dark observing sessions, guided remotely, will insure students relate what they uncover in “big data” to the awesome grandeur of the real sky.
