Benefits of Using Common App

Save Time. You input your personal information, academic history, activities, and essays once. Each additional school takes much less time to complete.

Streamlined Process. You can track all your applications in one place, monitor submission deadlines, and see which materials have been submitted.

Fee Waivers. If you qualify for fee waivers, you can apply the waiver to multiple schools through one platform.

Common Essay. You write one main personal statement that goes to all schools, though you may need to write supplemental essays for specific colleges.

Common App Essay Prompts

Common App provides several essay prompts to choose from (650-word limit). You pick one prompt and write a single essay that most of your schools will see. Some schools require additional supplemental essays beyond the main Common App essay.

How to Use Common App Strategically

  1. Start Early. Common App opens August 1st for the following year's applications. Starting early gives you time to write strong essays and gather materials.
  2. Research Each School. Even though you use one application, each school has different requirements. Some require supplemental essays, specific test scores, or additional materials.
  3. Customize When Possible. Use the "Additional Information" section to explain circumstances specific to each school when needed.
  4. Submit on Time. Each school has its own deadline, even though they all use Common App. Keep track of each deadline carefully.
  5. Proofread Everything. Once you submit to one school, you can't change certain parts of your Common App. Review carefully before your first submission.

Common App vs Coalition App

Some schools accept both Common App and Coalition App. You don't need to use both. Pick one platform and stick with it unless a specific school you want requires the other platform.
