The Common Application is accepted by more than 1,000 colleges and universities across the United States and internationally. If you're applying to multiple schools, using Common App can save you significant time and effort.
Common App is a single online application platform that allows you to apply to multiple colleges using one set of essays, activities, and personal information. You fill out your information once, then customize small sections for each school. Most colleges charge an application fee through Common App, though fee waivers are available for eligible students.
All eight Ivy League schools accept the Common Application:
Some major schools use their own application systems:
All UC schools (Berkeley, UCLA, San Diego, etc.) use the UC Application, not Common App.
California State Universities use the Cal State Apply system.
Save Time. You input your personal information, academic history, activities, and essays once. Each additional school takes much less time to complete.
Streamlined Process. You can track all your applications in one place, monitor submission deadlines, and see which materials have been submitted.
Fee Waivers. If you qualify for fee waivers, you can apply the waiver to multiple schools through one platform.
Common Essay. You write one main personal statement that goes to all schools, though you may need to write supplemental essays for specific colleges.
Common App provides several essay prompts to choose from (650-word limit). You pick one prompt and write a single essay that most of your schools will see. Some schools require additional supplemental essays beyond the main Common App essay.
Some schools accept both Common App and Coalition App. You don't need to use both. Pick one platform and stick with it unless a specific school you want requires the other platform.

How many colleges can I apply to through Common App?
You can apply to up to 20 colleges through Common App. If you need to apply to more than 20, you'll need to create a new account or use other application platforms.
Can I apply to the same college more than once?
No. Once you submit an application to a college through Common App, you can't submit another application to that same school for the same term.
Do all Common App schools have the same deadline?
No. Each school sets its own deadlines for Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision. Check each school's specific deadlines carefully.
Can I change my Common App after submitting to one school?
You can change some parts of your Common App after submitting to your first school, but you cannot change your personal essay or activities list. Plan accordingly before your first submission.
Does Common App cost money?
Common App itself is free to use. However, most colleges charge an application fee (usually $50-$90) when you submit your application. Fee waivers are available for students who qualify financially.
What's the difference between Common App and Coalition App?
Both are application platforms that work similarly. Common App is more widely accepted (1,000+ schools) while Coalition App is accepted by about 150 schools. Some schools accept both, so you can choose which platform you prefer.
